Plan Ahead

Travel Basics

Visa & Entry
Travelers from Visa Waiver countries need an ESTA ($21 online, submitted at least 72 hours ahead). Non-waiver nationals must apply for a B1/B2 visitor visa, which often takes weeks to issue. Get the paperwork in early because tournament demand will be heavy.
Most nationalities can stay up to 180 days without a visa. You receive an FMM tourist permit at the border, or fill it out online before departure. Attending matches in both Mexico and the US? You'll need separate entry permits for each.
Visa-exempt travelers need an eTA — $7 CAD, applied via the online form. If your nationality requires a full visa, apply well in advance. Processing is normally quick, though it can stretch during big events. The eTA is bound to the passport you applied with and lasts 5 years.
Currency & Costs
Currency: US Dollar (USD). Credit and debit cards work almost everywhere. Tipping is standard — 18-20% at restaurants and $1-2 per drink at bars. Casual-restaurant meals run $15-25; fast food is $8-15. Inside the stadiums, food and drinks are markedly pricier.
Currency: Mexican Peso (MXN). USD is widely taken in tourist areas, but paying in pesos delivers better rates. Tipping at 10-15% is standard. Local-restaurant meals run $5-10, which makes Mexico the most affordable host country. ATMs are widely available.
Pay in CAD. Card payments work everywhere, contactless included. 15-20% is the standard restaurant tip. Costs sit near US levels: budget $15-25 per meal. Be aware that Canadian shelf prices are pre-tax, so total cost arrives 13-15% above the listed menu price.
Weather (June-July)
Conditions differ significantly across host cities. The south is hot and humid: Miami 32°C, Houston 35°C, Dallas 36°C. The West Coast — LA 25°C, San Francisco 18°C, Seattle 22°C — runs milder and drier. On the East Coast (New York 29°C, Philadelphia 30°C, Boston 27°C) it's warm and humid. Plan on sunscreen, a hat, and lots of water at open-air stadiums.
Rainy weather sets in from June. Because Mexico City is at 2,200m, daytime tops out near 25°C and evenings cool down hard. Layers plus a rain jacket are recommended. Temperatures in Guadalajara and Monterrey climb to 30-33°C with more humidity. Expect frequent — but short — afternoon thunderstorms.
Some of the best weather Canada offers. In Toronto, expect about 26°C with occasional humid spells. Vancouver runs about 22°C with extended daylight (up to 16 hours) and minimal rain. Both cities offer comfortable conditions for outdoor events. Evening matches call for light layers.
Practical Info
Type A/B sockets, 120V. English is the main spoken language. Uber and Lyft cover the full host-city list. WiFi is generally free at hotels, cafes, and airports. Get an eSIM or prepaid SIM at the airport to handle mobile data. Transit quality is uneven: top-tier in New York, sparse in Dallas and Houston.
Type A/B sockets, 127V (matching US). Spanish is the main language but tourist areas and stadium zones see plenty of English. Uber and DiDi operate reliably in all three host cities. Pick up a local SIM (Telcel or AT&T Mexico) at the airport for cheap data and calls.
Power: Type A/B at 120V (US-compatible). Toronto is English; Vancouver bilingual English/French. Ride-hailing via Uber runs in both cities. Transit is reliable; Toronto TTC and Vancouver SkyTrain each link to their stadium. For visitors, Canadian mobile plans are pricey — an eSIM or prepaid is the better play.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it worth flying from Vienna instead of Bratislava?

For transatlantic trips, yes — almost always. Vienna is 60 kilometres from Bratislava, with direct train (Twin City Liner ferry, REX train and Slovak Lines bus all operate hourly) and driving time under an hour. Austrian Airlines operates nonstops from VIE to Newark, Chicago, Washington, Los Angeles, Miami and Toronto, and Lufthansa competes via Frankfurt and Munich from VIE. For most US host cities, a direct flight from Vienna will be cheaper than a BTS-connecting itinerary, and the ground transfer is cheap and straightforward. Check whether your accommodation or return flight works better from VIE or BTS before committing.

When should I book World Cup 2026 flights from Slovakia?

December 2025 through February 2026 is the cleanest EUR window whether booking from Bratislava, Košice or Vienna. Austrian Airlines summer inventory opens in late autumn, and the cheapest economy buckets on VIE direct flights to US destinations sell out by mid-April. For group-stage matches (11 to 27 June), lock fares by January. For knockout rounds through the 19 July final, December 2025 is safer — Austrian school summer holidays and broader European demand pull cheap Vienna inventory out of circulation quickly.

Do Slovak citizens need a visa for the USA, Mexico or Canada?

No full visa needed. Slovakia has been in the US Visa Waiver Program since 2008, so Slovak passport holders qualify for ESTA (USD 21, valid 2 years). Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before travel. For Canada, apply for eTA (CAD 7, valid 5 years) at canada.ca. For Mexico, Slovak citizens receive a tourist permit on arrival valid up to 180 days — no pre-arrival paperwork required. Use only official government websites; copycat ESTA and eTA sites charge inflated fees for the same authorisation.

Which European hub is cheapest for connecting from Slovakia?

Vienna on Austrian Airlines is the geographic and pricing winner for most Slovak travellers — a short ground transfer lets you board direct flights to six North American cities. Frankfurt on Lufthansa and Munich on Lufthansa add the widest US network depth (10+ direct American destinations) for venues not served from Vienna. Amsterdam on KLM is strong for New York and Atlanta with good seat pitch. Istanbul on Turkish is the value option for US West Coast and Canada despite the longer routing. For fans in eastern Slovakia (Košice, Prešov), connecting via Warsaw on LOT can also work — LOT flies direct from WAW to New York JFK, Newark, Chicago and Miami.

Can I combine matches in multiple North American countries?

Yes, easily. Open-jaw bookings from Vienna or Frankfurt let you arrive in one North American city and depart from another — often priced similarly to a round trip. Within North America, cheap domestic hops on Southwest, JetBlue, Volaris (Mexico) and Air Canada Rouge connect the host cities affordably. Your ESTA covers multiple USA entries, Mexican tourist permits cover multiple entries for their validity, and Canadian eTA is valid 5 years. Leave a 4-hour buffer between separately ticketed international and domestic flights to rebook safely if a connection misses.

What if I want to follow Slovakia to matches in different host cities?

If Slovakia qualifies for the tournament, the draw determines your group-stage host cities — then knockout routing depends on results. Plan two or three separate US city trips and buy flexible domestic US flights between them. Southwest Airlines offers the most flexible fare-change policy of any US carrier; JetBlue and American are second. European-to-US flights on Austrian or Lufthansa are harder to change last-minute, so book a slightly longer stay covering all three group matches, then return home once knockout qualification is clear. For Vatreni-style knockout commitment (quarter-final or later), add a second trip rather than extending the first.

Do I need travel insurance beyond Slovak VšZP coverage?

Yes, essential. VšZP, Dôvera, Union and your EHIC card cover nothing in North America, and a US hospital visit can cost EUR 30,000 or more. Buy a tournament-length travel medical policy with at least EUR 300,000 cover (500,000 ideal for USA), trip cancellation, baggage and flight delay coverage. Allianz Slovakia, Generali Slovakia and Union poisťovňa all sell policies from EUR 40 to 150. Confirm USA is explicitly covered and medical repatriation by air ambulance is included. If you have premium credit card travel insurance (Tatra banka, VÚB, ČSOB), read the exclusions carefully — USA coverage is often capped too low for serious American medical bills.
